I Don’t Like Drag Queens

I live in the gayest city in the country and I don’t like drag shows. I feel like watching a drag show is like having someone quote Napoleon Dynamite to you. It’s so far from funny you don’t even bother to respond. Like, I get it, you’re a man dressed up like a woman. That’s cool if that’s what you’re into but its not entertainment.

The thing is, drag queens are making fun of women. How else would you describe exaggerating the characteristics of someone for a cheap laugh? At the end of the day it’s a bunch of men sitting around making fun of women. Would you let a bunch [group of people belonging to dominate race/sexual orientation] make fun of [minority group] for the lolz?

You know what else? Women are not divas! Drag queens dress up like women, but its only the worst, hypersexualized, superficial, catty and vapid characteristics that are shown. How is this even okay?

Worse, is that I feel like its men trying to be better at being women than women are. If you’ve ever watched America’s Next Top Model you know the girls are taught their runway walk by a man. Watching this as a kid, I just felt so dumb that even something that is exclusively female (a supermodel’s runway walk) could be best taught by a man.

Whether drag queens as individuals hate women or not is irrelevant. The damage is done whether it’s intentional or not.

Quit jocking bros.

    Loud, obnoxious, rude, demeaning,  etc…
I use to work at a bar that had drag shows and the staff use to joke that all drag queens were 3B.. Broke, bitter bitches
When they are hot, they are a terror to be around, puffed up drama queens who drag others down, back bite and constantly want someone else to pay for something or do things for them
When they get older (or never were hot) , they get all bitter because no one wants to see them in drag anymore…and they all drink like fish, and lets not go into drug use
No one wants to date one, except freaks and attentio whores
We need more bars where men can get away from these negative bitches and their flamer hanger ons

the way I see it, men who become drag queens generally do because of an appreciation for the female body/fashion/etc. So if anything, they’re making fun of themselves as much as women, and in general the idea of gender and sexuality as a whole. Themselves, because they aren’t ever going to be as fabulous as a woman, and so it is a rather hammed up experience to begin with. Women, in the ways you’ve described, though I honestly don’t think it’s done in an hateful way… and gender and sexuality because ultimately they are challenging what society’s expectations of men, of women, of men dressed like women and also of women dressed like men.

Why is a runway walk exclusively female? Sexism at it’s finest.

    You so missed the mark….

If you have ever seen RuPaul’s Drag Race or RuPaul’s Drag U, which I am assuming you have since you used the picture in this article, you would see that drag queen’s are not in any way making fun of women. You obviously have a sexist opinion in which men can only do men things and women can only do women things. Life is a gift and it is about self expression and once the world learns to accept everyone for who they are then we will live in a better place. Your perception of a small group of drag queens’ personalities and drug use cannot speak for drag queens everywhere. I have only seen loving, respecting drag queens that dress like women as a tribute to the woman gender since so many out there struggle with their own self perception. From what I have seen, drag queens use the glam and humor and “campiness” of it all as a tribute to women and men alike, that you can be whomever you want and do whatever you want as long as you are respectful to everyone.

my understanding of drag is not that they are mocking women, but are mocking femininity.  there’s a reason drag queens are gay.  fucking with gender roles is an inherently queer idea.  just as queer culture has become more and more influenced by the mainstream, hetero-normative ideals, queer subcultures have become increasingly misguided.  that is not to say any sort of queer subculture is bad, but just that it can house a few bad apples.

i don’t get drag queens that try to just look pretty, and i don’t like watching them.  maybe that’s more who you’re speaking on.  but i don’t think it has any sort of negative effect on women’s standing in society.  on the contrary, the drag queens who are spot on, say a whole lot more about how ridiculous gender roles are; how fluid gender can be; and how fabulous and hilarious and beautiful queer communities can be.

I am a drag queen, and I don’t make fun of being female….i do make jokes such as “lick my neck, my back, lick my pussy and my crack” but its for pure entertainment…i find it offensive that you think in such a sexist way.

Next time you have a thought…..let it go….leave the philosophical thinking to the big boys.
