Immediately Stop Telling Women to “Smile”

Seriously, why would you ever do this?

I can’t tell you the number of times I am minding my own business walking down the street, grocery shopping or doing something at a bar and a guy makes this caveman monosyllabic command. Um no, I’ll do whatever I want k thx bye.

To be the most charitable that I can, maybe the guy just wants women to be happy and has no social skills. In that case, maybe you should smile at her or if it’s appropriate give her a compliment or if it’s not compliment the weather or something about wherever you are. Being in a good mood is contagious, this will really help other people, I promise.

But walking up to someone and demanding that they do something is 100% always going to put them on the defensive. When this happens to me I’m like oh, was I not smiling before? Do I have bitchface? Do I come off like a total nerd? I mean at this point I am a complete stranger to you?

Finally, like um what’s wrong with women when they aren’t smiling? Is it really that much of a hardship for you to deal with a woman who isn’t falling over herself to show you what a vast improvement you are to her life?

I dunno guys, this whole situation just baffles me every time. It seems so obviously rude and weird and like, what do you think the expected outcome is going to be? The girls gonna be like OMGZ ok! So, just stop. Please. It’s weird.

I see what you did there.

I once yelled at a man in a bar who told me to smile that he was being sexist and that he needed to leave me alone. Everyone stopped what they were doing and stared at me.

(also I love your blog I never comment but I just love your writing and wit.)

Maybe (no reason to believe it is true) they know that simply smiling makes you feel better and it is contagious. It just may have a ripple effect if someone else sees it.
